Jamie Barker: The Happy Hybrid Athlete

He lifts, runs, cycles and swims. Jamie Barker (21) is an athlete through and through. His fantastic shape is only surpassed by his story how he became a hybrid athlete.

Jamie tells: “At 15 I started lifting weights and fell in love with the process of getting bigger. In January 2021 I ran 5K every day raising 2000 Pounds for my best mate with cancer. I fell in love with running but shortly gave it up after. I put all my focus into the gym and competed in bodybuilding in June 2023. This led to body dysmorphia, binge eating and a hatred for the gym. So I turned my head to running as an escape from all this. I was getting fast and running half marathons but I didn’t feel confident in my body. I began lifting again and with running the bodyfat dropped off very quickly. Now I feel confident in my own skin, lift heavy and run fast daily which makes me a hybrid athlete… but also the happiest I’ve ever been.”

Jamie’s goal now is to compete in a bodybuilding show and in an Ironman 70.3 in 2024. On Instagram and TikTok he shares his journey and experience and provides a lot of information. He definitely has the ability to convey his passion.

What to expect when hybrid training?

Jamie: “You will get a lot faster. If you stick to a running plan, you can get fast… quickly. You’ll always be hungry and food will taste so much better. You will get stronger week on week… if you stick to a proper training plan. You will get very shredded without having to track calories. You can literally eat whatever you want because you burn so many calories. Your sleep will improve massively. Your mood an mental health will skyrocket. You will start to dream big… very big. Goals will turn into reality. Increased discipline will reflect through all aspects of life. You’ll become part of the hybrid community.”

What is he learning as a 21-year-old hybrid athlete?

Jamie: “Pain is temporary, pride is forever. Surround yourself with likeminded people. Find a way to make your passion your life. Seek delayed gratification, not instant gratification. Stop comparing yourself to others. It’s you versus you. Discipline > motivation. Stop feeling sorry for yourself. Take action. Become the best version of yourself.”

Hybrid training is the best decision he has made, Jamie says. In sum, the three pillars of a hybrid athlete are: speed, strength and size. Happiness is a fourth reason to follow Jamie Barker.
